DOCUMENTING UKRAINE: BEARING WITNESS TO WAR

Als Reaktion auf den langandauernden russischen Angriffskrieg auf die Ukraine widmet das Bildraum Studio, in Kooperation mit dem IWM - Institut für die Wissenschaften vom Menschen und dessen Programm „Documenting Ukraine“, den fotografischen Positionen von mehreren Künstler*innen eine Gruppenausstellung, darunter: Anastasia Vlasova, visual-storyteller 2015 'Magnum Foundation Human Rights' und 'Photography Fellow' an der NYU, zudem Fotoreporterin für Hromadske, The Washington Post, The Guardian und Der Spiegel; Sasha Kurmaz, interdisziplinärer Künstler und Preisträger des 'Kazimir Malevich Art Award 2020' sowie Artem Halkin, Fotograf und fester Bestandteil des Medienprojektes Ukraїner, welches über Menschen, Kunst und Wirtschaft aus den entlegensten Winkeln der Ukraine berichtet.

Alle Beiträge wurden vom IWM - Institut für die Wissenschaften vom Menschen im Jahr 2022 unterstützt. Die Künstler*innen reisten durch die Ukraine und hielten das Leben an der Front und in den besetzten Gebieten fest. Beeinflusst von ihren persönlichen Erfahrungen machten sie sich den Dokumentationscharakter der Fotografie, wie auch jenen der Bildmanipulation, anhand von Collagierungen oder digitalen Eingriffen zu Nutzen.

Documenting Ukraine

Documenting Ukraine is an IWM research project that seeks to contribute to creating a record of the Russo-Ukrainian War. Through Documenting Ukraine, the IWM supports scholars, journalists, public intellectuals, artists, and archivists based in Ukraine as they work on documentation projects that establish and preserve a factual record—whether through reporting, gathering published source material, or collecting oral testimony—or that bring meaning to events through intellectual reflection and artistic interpretation. The materials collected and produced through these projects will be housed in a complex, trans-disciplinary archive.

Documenting Ukraine foresees the construction of a complex archive of materials created and collected by project participants and the presentation of these materials to the public, in cooperation with partner institutions, including the Center for Urban History (Lviv), the Fortunoff Video Archive for Holocaust Testimonies at Yale University, the Public Interest Journalism Lab (Kyiv) and Bildrecht, Vienna.
